Working for Women Featured on NBC4 Washington to Spotlight the Financial Realities Facing Working Women

This week, Working for Women was featured on NBC4 Washington, one of the nation’s largest local television markets, to discuss our Head Above Water campaign and the financial realities facing millions of working women across the United States.

During the interview, our Founder & CEO, Beth Bengtson, spoke with reporter, Molette Green, about the growing financial pressures women face and why so many are working harder than ever yet still struggling to stay afloat. While these challenges are often viewed as individual circumstances, they are part of a much larger economic reality affecting families and communities nationwide.

The Head Above Water campaign was created to make those realities visible.

Inspired by data from United For ALICE®, the campaign shines a light on the millions of women who earn above the federal poverty level but still cannot consistently afford the basics, including housing, childcare, transportation, healthcare, and food. These are women who are employed, contributing to their communities, and doing everything society asks of them, yet continue to face impossible financial choices.

“Head Above Water” challenges the misconception that employment alone guarantees financial stability. Instead, it asks us to recognize the structural barriers that leave so many working women living paycheck to paycheck despite their resilience and determination.

Our appearance on NBC4 Washington represents another meaningful step in expanding awareness beyond our existing community and bringing this conversation to a broader audience. Every opportunity to share these stories helps increase understanding of the systemic issues affecting women’s economic mobility and reinforces the need for solutions that address the root causes—not just the symptoms—of financial insecurity.

At Working for Women, we believe that changing outcomes begins with changing the conversation. Through innovative programs, strategic partnerships, and initiatives like Head Above Water, we are working to ensure more women have access to the opportunities, resources, and support they need to achieve lasting financial independence.

We are grateful to NBC4 Washington for helping amplify this important issue and for providing a platform to discuss the economic realities facing working women today.
